FRL Unit Selection & Maintenance Guide
1. Purpose
This SOP defines the standard procedure for selection, installation and maintenance of Filter-Regulator-Lubricator (FRL) units used in pneumatic systems to ensure reliable operation, equipment protection and reduced maintenance cost.
2. Scope
Applicable for pneumatic control systems, automation panels, instrument air systems, control valves, actuators, pneumatic cylinders and industrial automation equipment.
3. Responsibility
- Instrumentation Engineer – Technical selection approval
- Maintenance Engineer – Installation and periodic servicing
- Technician – Routine inspection and maintenance
4. Filter Selection Criteria

Selection Logic:
40 micron filter → General dust and rust protection.
5 micron filter → Precision instruments protection.
5. FRL Size Selection
FRL size should be selected based on air consumption, flow rate, simultaneous load conditions and allowable pressure drop.
Rule: FRL rated flow ≥ 1.5 × maximum air consumption.
Example: If air consumption is 60 SCFM, select FRL rated at least 90 SCFM.
6. Lubricator Oil Selection
Recommended Oils:
- ISO VG-32 Pneumatic Oil (standard industrial use)
- ISO VG-46 (high temperature/heavy duty)
- SAE-10 Non-detergent oil
Avoid Using:
- Engine oil
- Hydraulic oil
- Gear oil
- Cooking oil
- Detergent oils
Wrong oil can damage seals, clog passages and cause valve sticking.
7. Installation Guidelines
- Install in correct sequence: Filter → Regulator → Lubricator
- Ensure airflow direction marking is correct
- Install close to equipment
- Provide easy access for draining moisture
- Ensure leak-free connections
8. Maintenance Procedure
Daily / Weekly Checks:
- Drain water from filter bowl
- Check pressure gauge reading
- Check lubricator oil level
- Check for air leaks
Monthly Maintenance:
- Inspect filter element condition
- Check regulator pressure stability
- Inspect bowl cracks
- Verify drain valve operation
3–6 Month Preventive Maintenance:
- Replace filter element
- Inspect regulator diaphragm
- Clean lubricator nozzle
- Verify pressure calibration
9. Do’s and Don’ts
Do’s:
- Use clean compressed air
- Use correct pneumatic oil
- Select proper micron rating
- Replace filter periodically
- Size FRL correctly
Don’ts:
- Do not use wrong oil
- Do not ignore pressure drop
- Do not install FRL in wrong sequence
- Do not operate with cracked bowl
- Do not over-lubricate system
