š¦ Junction Box Sizing Rules
- Maximum 60% panel utilization allowed
- Minimum 50 mm wiring space on sides
- Minimum 75 mm space for cable entry
- Minimum 25 mm gap between terminal rows
- Never exceed 24 terminal pairs without marshalling
š·ļø Types of Junction Boxes
1. Field Junction Box (FJB)
- Installed near instruments
- Used for signal collection
- Minimum size: 200 Ć 150 Ć 100 mm
2. Marshalling Cabinet
- Located in control room
- Separates field & DCS signals
- Minimum depth: 200 mm
3. Local Control Station (LCS)
- Used for start/stop control
- Push button center height: 1200ā1500 mm
4. Intrinsically Safe (IS) JB
- Used in hazardous areas
- Never mix IS & Non-IS wiring
š§± Material Selection
| Environment | Material |
|---|---|
| Indoor | GRP / Mild Steel |
| Outdoor | GRP / SS 304 |
| Corrosive | SS 316 |
| Hazardous | Flameproof GI |
All outdoor boxes must have canopy (50 mm projection)
š Installation & Mounting Rules
- Mounting height: 900ā1200 mm
- Minimum 4 fixing points
- Use SS bolts (minimum M8)
- Support frame: MS angle 50Ć50Ć5 mm
- Distance between supports: max 600 mm
- Cable entry must be from bottom (outdoor)
š Cable & Glanding Rules
- Use double compression glands
- Minimum gland size: M20
- Unused entries must be sealed
- Use SS316 glands in corrosive areas
- Hazardous areas require Ex-certified glands
š Terminal Block Rules
- Use DIN rail mounted terminals
- Minimum 20% spare terminals
- Separate signal & power wiring
- Use ferrules on every wire
- 1 earth terminal per 10 signals
ā ļø Additional Critical Rules (Not Commonly Followed)
- Shielded cable grounding must be single-point only
- Analog & digital cables must be segregated
- JB internal temperature rise should be monitored in high-density wiring
- Loop checking tags must match ISA standards
- Use surge protection terminals in critical signals
- Vibration-prone areas must use anti-vibration mounts
š·ļø Identification & Tagging
- SS tag plate mandatory (50Ć25 mm)
- Each terminal must have ferrule number
- Use heat shrink markers in hazardous areas
- Multicore cable tagging required at both ends
š« Common Site Mistakes
- No earthing
- Overcrowded JB
- Improper gland sealing
- Mixing IS & Non-IS wiring
- No tagging
- Top cable entry in outdoor JB
